The weather has turned colder, and thermal underwear is once again in high demand. In Dezhou, Shandong, the price of thermal wear has been on the rise this season compared to the same period last year. This increase is largely due to the soaring cost of cotton, which has had a ripple effect across the textile industry.
At a store on Wenhua Road, a popular brand of cotton thermal underwear saw its price jump from 68 yuan to 73 yuan—a rise of over 7%. Even high-end thermal wear, which previously sold for between 300 and 400 yuan, has seen prices go up by tens of yuan. When asked if the price hike was due to falling demand or cooler weather, a sales representative at the store dismissed the idea. “It's not about the weather or sales performance,†they said. “The main reason is the rising cost of cotton.â€
This trend isn’t limited to thermal wear. Socks, undergarments, and other textile products have also experienced price increases. As cotton remains the dominant material in clothing production, rising cotton prices are squeezing profit margins for manufacturers.
According to a manager at an apparel company, the increase in cotton prices has led to reduced processing profits. Most garment factories today still use stockpiled cotton, but the rising cost of new cotton is starting to affect fabric suppliers, which in turn impacts garment makers. While the effects are not yet fully felt, the situation is being closely monitored.
Many textile and garment companies are now feeling the pressure. One factory owner expressed concern: “If we place orders now, we have to adjust our pricing based on current market conditions. But if cotton prices keep climbing, our costs will go up during production, and our profit margins will shrink significantly. It might even lead to losses.†The uncertainty surrounding cotton prices is causing growing anxiety among industry players, who are trying to balance cost control with maintaining competitiveness in a tough market.
