As the weather turned colder, thermal underwear has once again become a must-have item. In Dezhou, Shandong, the price of thermal wear has seen a noticeable increase this year compared to the same period last year. This trend is largely attributed to the rising cost of cotton, which has had a ripple effect across the textile industry.
At a store on Wenhua Road, a regular set of cotton thermal underwear has gone up from 68 yuan to 73 yuan—a rise of over 7%. Meanwhile, high-end thermal wear, which previously sold for between 300 and 400 yuan, has also experienced price hikes, with some items increasing by as much as tens of yuan. When asked if the price increases were due to falling demand or cooler weather, a store employee dismissed the idea, explaining that the main reason was the surge in cotton prices.
The impact isn't limited to thermal underwear alone. Socks, undergarments, and other textile products have all seen varying degrees of price increases. As one representative from an apparel company explained, cotton is a major component of clothing production, so rising cotton costs have led to shrinking profit margins for garment manufacturers.
Most clothing factories today are using existing inventory of cotton, but the rising cost of new cotton is beginning to affect fabric suppliers, which in turn affects the final product. While the full impact on clothing manufacturers hasn’t been felt yet, it’s already causing concern.
According to reports, many textile and garment companies are now feeling the pressure. “If we place an order now, we have to adjust our pricing based on current market conditions,†said a manager at a garment processing company. “But if cotton prices keep rising, our production costs will go up, and our profit margins will shrink significantly. It might even lead to losses, which wouldn’t be worth it.†The growing uncertainty surrounding cotton prices has left many in the industry worried about their future stability.
