Otter Republic, also known as OR, is a well-established women's fashion brand from Taiwan under the Crown Star Group. The brand made a quiet entrance into the mainland Chinese market at the end of 2010 and has since been actively expanding its presence. In late February, it officially launched on Taobao Mall, without any major promotional efforts, yet still managed to achieve small-scale test sales that were met with positive feedback. After entering the mainland market, OR quickly integrated its design and R&D teams in both Taipei and Shanghai, specifically creating spring and summer collections tailored for the Chinese consumer. According to Edward Brand, the general manager of the OR brand, in the spring and summer of 2011, OR focused on environmental sustainability by using FLYCOOL fiber—a highly technological material known for its cooling properties. This allowed them to develop a range of comfortable, temperature-regulating products. FLYCOOL fabric, made from its proprietary yarns, offers multiple benefits such as moisture-wicking, breathability, and lightweight comfort. When exposed to sunlight, fabrics woven with FLYCOOL fibers can provide an immediate cooling effect of 1–2°C, and up to a 3–5°C temperature difference over time. The technology is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, making it a popular choice among global brands. In just a few years, FLYCOOL has been adopted by major sports brands like Nike, Adidas, and Puma, as well as leading underwear labels such as Diane and Wacoal, and even some fashion houses like Royal Golden Fox and Crocodile Hong Kong. OR selected FLYCOOL to create four new product series, featuring nearly 40 items with up to eight color options and intricate enamel printing designs. However, due to limited production capacity, FLYCOOL fiber remains expensive. T-shirts made from this material cost two to three times more than standard mercerized cotton products. To make FLYCOOL more accessible to eco-conscious consumers, OR partnered with group-buying platforms for short-term promotions, allowing customers to experience the fabric at a discounted price. Edward explained that this strategy helps expand brand awareness without harming the brand’s premium image, creating a win-win situation. OR has already begun discussions with several major domestic group-buying sites, planning to offer products at cost or even below-cost prices during the spring and summer season.
