Indian cocoon producer ** drastically cuts raw silk import tariffs
On March 4, over 100 silkworm cocoon producers, primarily from Challakere and Molacalmarutaluks, organized a one-day protest to express their discontent with the federal government’s abrupt decision to significantly lower raw silk import tariffs in Geduleul. The move, which came as a surprise to many in the industry, has sparked widespread anger among local farmers who rely heavily on domestic silk production.
Bharatiya Kisan Sangha (BKS) representatives, including GS Chandrasekhar and Secretary-General G Thippeswamy, along with SVR members from Soorammanahalli and Kondlahalli, have raised concerns with the *Times of India*. They highlighted that the price of silkworm cocoons has plummeted dramatically, dropping from Rs 350 per kilogram to just Rs 135. This sharp decline has left many farmers struggling to make ends meet.
The protesters argue that the central government’s hasty policy change has severely impacted domestic producers, leading to massive financial losses. “While the Central Silk Committee, led by H Hanumanthappa, takes pride in the expansion of mulberry cultivation and increased cocoon output, the recent tariff cuts have dealt a fatal blow to our livelihoods,†they said, expressing deep frustration with the lack of consultation and support from policymakers.
Farmers are now demanding more transparency and better protection for their interests, calling for a review of the tariff policy to prevent further damage to the sector. With rising costs and falling prices, many fear that without intervention, the future of small-scale silk farming in the region may be at risk.
