On March 4, over 100 silkworm cocoon producers, primarily from Challakere and Molacalmarutaluks, organized a one-day protest march to express their discontent with the federal government's sudden decision to significantly lower raw silk import tariffs. The move has sparked widespread anger among local farmers who feel it undermines their livelihoods.
Bharatiya Kisan Sangha (BKS) representatives, including GS Chandrasekhar and Secretary-General G Thippeswamy, along with SVR leaders from Soorammanahalli and Kondlahalli, have voiced their concerns to the *Times of India*. They highlighted that the price of silkworm cocoons in the Karnataka market has plummeted dramatically, dropping from Rs 350 per kg to just Rs 135 per kg. This sharp decline has left many farmers in financial distress.
The producers criticized the central government for acting hastily without considering the impact on domestic producers. "The Central Silk Committee, led by H Hanumanthappa, has celebrated the expansion of mulberry plantations and increased cocoon production," they said. "But this sudden tariff cut has dealt us a devastating blow." They argued that such policies are not only unfair but also threaten the sustainability of the local silk industry, which has long been a vital part of the region’s economy.
