In recent days, China Consumer Net and Sina.com launched their annual “3·15” survey on jewelry quality and service. The findings revealed that 58.3% of consumers are dissatisfied with the quality and service of jewelry products. Among the issues raised, problems like fake or substandard items, misleading labels, and exaggerated advertising have emerged as the top concerns, with 22.6% of respondents citing these as the main reasons for their dissatisfaction. Consumers reported that complaints mainly fall into five key areas. First, many low-quality products are passed off as high-end jade or jewelry. This is especially common in the case of expensive stones like Hetian jade. Second, false claims about the origin or craftsmanship of the products mislead buyers. Third, non-standardized labeling and misleading names confuse customers. Fourth, some shopping malls use promotional tactics—like small-ticket draws or prizes—to give away inferior items. Lastly, poor after-sales service is a major issue, with many businesses failing to provide timely support when damage occurs. Experts advise consumers to be cautious when purchasing jewelry. They recommend focusing on material quality, learning basic identification methods, and buying from reputable stores rather than unregulated markets. It's also important to seek expert guidance to avoid counterfeit products. Zhou Nanquan, a researcher at the National Palace Museum, shared six ways to distinguish real jade from fakes. These include examining the material type, color, carving style, design, historical markings, and combining knowledge from history, archaeology, and science. In the jewelry market, the price difference between genuine and fake items can be staggering. For instance, some sellers replace authentic materials like Wada jade with cheaper alternatives such as Russian jade, making it difficult for inexperienced buyers to tell the difference. As one seasoned seller noted, “There’s no way to sustain a business without real products.” Some high-end jewelers claim to offer appraisal certificates and detailed care instructions. However, experts point out that current certification systems lack clear standards for identifying the origin of jade. This leaves room for uncertainty, even if merchants are honest. Without proper guidelines, there’s no guarantee that certified items are truly authentic. Overall, the jewelry and jade industry remains complex, with many challenges for both consumers and professionals. Staying informed and choosing reliable sources are essential steps in avoiding fraud and ensuring quality purchases.
