India is the second largest cotton producer and exporter in the world. In the 2011-12 marketing year (August-July), India produced 34.25 million bales of cotton, a record high, weighing 170 kg per bale.
In its first estimate in April, the U.S. Department of Agriculture had locked India’s cotton production at 32.3 million bales in 2012-13. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has now lowered its estimate to 30 million bales.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s report stated that although rainfall in August may have stimulated farmers to grow more cotton, the continued drought in the latter part of this year indicates that the cotton acreage may be further reduced. The yield is expected to further increase to 480 kg/ha and the output will drop to 30 million bales, which is 700,000 bales lower than the current estimate.
The US Department of Agriculture report showed that exports are expected to decrease from 12.68 million bales last year to 5.4 million bales due to lower production prospects.
To date, monsoon rainfall has decreased by 20%. In the state of Gujarat, dry elephants have appeared in the main cotton-growing states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, farmers are expected to sow 10.6 million hectares of cotton fields this year, which is 200,000 hectares less than the first estimate, far below the government’s 11.5 million hectares target.
About two-thirds of India’s cotton production comes from the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Odisha, where cotton is eaten by heaven. The USDA said that if it rains in August, planting area may increase, but due to the delay in planting time, the yield may be affected.
