Stunning growth: India's handicraft exports increased by 14% in April

As demand in the United States and Europe continues to increase, data from the Indian Handicraft Export Promotion Council (EPCH) shows that Indian handicraft exports have increased by 14%. Exports of handicrafts soared to $204 million in April this year, compared with $179.9 million in exports during the same period last year.

The committee expects that this trend will be maintained throughout the fiscal year. The Commission expects that during this period, exports will increase to US$2.7 billion. The growth of demand in the United States and Europe will provide support for Indian exports. However, the demand in budding markets such as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East is also increasing.

About 60% of Indian handicraft exports are exported to the United States and Europe.

The largest increase in exports was in wood products, which increased by 26.9%, imitation jewelry increased by 21%, shawls by art products by 19%, miscellaneous handicrafts by 15%, and artistic metal handicrafts by 13.49%.

In the 2010-11 fiscal year, exports of handicrafts increased by approximately 26% year-on-year to reach US$2.3 billion.

The growth in the export of handicrafts was in line with the growth trend of India’s overall merchandise exports. Commodity exports soared 37.5% year-on-year to US$245.9 billion.
