India's carpet exports rose by 7% in May 2011

Rising demand from emerging markets, such as Latin America and China, pushed India’s carpet exports to rise to US$73 million in May 2011, while exports during the same period in 2010 were US$68 million, a year-on-year increase of 7%, according to the Export Promotion Association statistics.

An Indian carpet export promotion official said that from emerging markets, such as Latin America and China, the Middle East, in addition to the traditional market, such as the United States and Europe, the number of orders increased significantly.

About 40% of India's total carpet exports are exported to Europe, while exports to the United States, the Middle East and Latin America account for 30%, 20% and 10% respectively.

In April 2011, Indian carpet exports increased by 13% year-on-year to US$129 million.

The departments with the highest increase in registration included man-made fiber carpets, an increase of 25%; manual weaving of tufted carpets, an increase of 12.4%; handloom silk carpets, an increase of 11%.

India’s carpet sector is one of the main sources of life for 2.5 million workers. The Indian Carpet Export Promotion Association predicts that carpet exports in the 2011-12 fiscal year will increase by 25% year-on-year.

In the 2010-11 fiscal year, India’s total carpet exports increased by 24% year-on-year to US$653 million.
