Hi everyone, I'm Jen from @2lillemons on Instagram, and I'm thrilled to share my favorite Oliver + S pattern with you today—the Fairy Tale Dress. About five years ago, I began sewing clothes for my daughter and stumbled upon the free Lazy Days Skirt pattern while browsing Pinterest. That discovery led me to explore more of the free patterns on their website, and I fell in love with them. They reignited my passion for sewing and sparked an obsession with collecting Oliver + S patterns. I now own over 20 of them, and I've been sewing them ever since, learning so much along the way.
Of all Liesl's designs, the Fairy Tale Dress is my absolute favorite. Its classic silhouette allows for endless customization options, making it simple or detailed depending on your preference. Plus, there are countless ways to tweak the pattern, as you'll soon see. I've experimented with various fabrics, from basic cotton to luxurious silk and brocades. Whether dressed up or down, it always looks stunning.
To be honest, I was initially intimidated by the pattern's difficulty level. A blog post mentioned creating a muslin for fitting (a muslin?!). I confess I skipped that step but gathered enough courage to give it a try. The instructions were clear and manageable. My first attempt was for my daughter to wear to the Nutcracker Ballet. It featured white cotton with gold polka dots and a skirt with a sparkly tulle overlay instead of an underskirt. While the dress turned out well, the tulle overlay could have been better executed. I even made a furry woodland cape to match.
Afterward, I created a sequined top paired with lavender dupioni silk for one of my friend's daughters. For this version, I replaced the gathers with box pleats—a fun challenge with the materials. It remains one of my favorites!
This inspired another Nutcracker-inspired dress for my daughter, this time in blush and gold brocade. I reused the box pleats and swapped the tulip sleeves for cap sleeves. This dress saw plenty of wear.
Other projects include a grey corduroy dress with a velvet collar and a matching 18-inch doll dress, two flower girl dresses for our beloved babysitter's wedding, and a cotton sateen First Communion dress. For the latter, I kept the fabric simple yet added intricate details like lace and pintucks.
The latest addition to my collection is one of my new favorites. It features a beautiful fabric from Rifle Paper Co., showcasing simplicity without collars, sleeves, or a sash—just the fabric adorned with a small bow. Friends loved it so much that I ended up making two more!
Thank you for letting me share these creations with you.
