Cindy is back with us for a visit! It feels like we just caught up with her last time, but here she is again, sharing more of her sewing adventures. Last time, she told us how she customized the 2+2 Blouse and even turned the Class Picnic Blouse into a spaghetti strap top. Not only that, but her family also hosted Flat S (and taught her how to surf!) last year. Today, she's here to talk about her favorite Oliver + S pattern. Thanks so much for dropping by, Cindy!

Hi everyone, I'm Cindy from *Siestas & Sewing*, and I've been an Oliver + S fan for what feels like forever. Picking a favorite pattern from their collection is tough because they're all so fantastic. If I had to narrow it down, though, I'd say the Sandbox Pants are my absolute favorite.

The Sandbox Pants are a classic pull-on pattern that never goes out of style. The fit is spot-on—neither too tight nor too loose—and the elastic-and-drawstring combo waistband is genius. Over the years, I’ve sewn these pants at least ten times for my son and two younger daughters.
Here’s a little comparison for you. Back when Patrick was smaller, these were my go-to pants for him. They’re easy to sew, fit beautifully, and most importantly, he loved wearing them because they were so comfortable. Of course, now that he’s older, he’s grown a ton, and my photography skills have improved dramatically too!

I’ve experimented quite a bit with this pattern over the years. Sometimes I swap out the pockets or add knee patches for durability. Other times, I get creative with stencils, like those cute starfish designs I used recently.

For colder weather, I’ve even lined the pants to create cozy winter wear for my nephews. And let’s not forget about the endless possibilities when it comes to customization. I once added rickrack trim to give them a pop of color, which turned out adorable.
One of my favorite variations is turning the Sandbox Pants into shorts. My little girls wore a pair of these shorts for three whole summers before they grew out of them. When Brenna Kate needed some new shorts for school, I grabbed my trusty Sandbox pattern and got to work.

This time around, I used rib knit fabric for the waistband, rounded the front patch pockets, and really embraced the topstitching. Brenna Kate adored them—or at least I think she did, since she wore them nonstop for 24 hours straight before I finally convinced her to change so I could wash them.
Still not convinced you need your own copy of the Sandbox pattern? Let me show you some of the amazing variations other sewists have created using the same pattern:
- Fine-wale corduroy pants
- Space-themed shorts
- Plaid pants
- Frilly Sandbox versions
- Contrasting cuffs and waistbands
- Capri-length Sandbox pants
- Oddly mismatched leg lengths
- Older girl versions
- Convertible pants (pants-to-shorts)
- Bright colorful prints
- Rickrack trim details
- Madras-style shorts
- Knit fabric adaptations
- Girly shorts with frills
Each version shows just how versatile this pattern is, whether you're aiming for casual comfort or something a bit more playful.

So there you have it! Cindy’s love for the Sandbox Pants shines through every detail she shared. Whether you're looking to make pants, shorts, or something entirely unique, this pattern truly has endless possibilities. Happy sewing, everyone!
