What is oil rock?

Oil shale, like coal, oil and natural gas, is a fossil fuel and is a non-renewable resource and primary energy source.

Oil shale (also known as oil shale) is a high-ash sedimentary rock containing combustible organic matter. The main difference between it and coal is that ash is more than 40%. The main difference from carbonaceous shale is that the oil content is more than 3.5%. Shale oil can be obtained by low-temperature dry distillation of oil shale. The shale oil is similar to crude oil and can be made into gasoline, diesel or as fuel oil. In addition to being separately formed, oil shale is often mined with coal to form associated deposits.

At present, most of the oil shale distribution areas in the world have low geological exploration, and it is difficult to correctly predict the global oil shale resources. Only some countries have carried out detailed exploration and evaluation of the country's oil shale deposits. As far as the current exploration situation is concerned, the United States is the world's richest oil shale resource, with a proven geological resource of 334 billion tons, equivalent to 303.6 billion tons of shale oil.

From 2004 to 2006, China conducted the first domestic evaluation of oil shale resources, identifying 739.9 billion tons of geological resources and 47.6 billion tons of shale oil. The oil shale produced in China during the coal mining process reached nearly 10 million tons. Only the oil shale of the Fushun West Open-pit Mine has an annual abandonment of 8 million tons. It takes up a large amount of cultivated land and seriously affects the ecological environment around the mining area.
